Synopsis

Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for killing two African-American men. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. Reformed and fresh out of prison, Derek severs contact with the gang and becomes determined to keep Danny from going down the same violent path as he did.

Trying to decide between American History X and something shorter. Is the running time part of the appeal here?

caoimheryan · 30 Oct 2026, 23:08 UTC

Ronan, that is what I like about a shortlist. It makes me stop endlessly browsing and actually choose.

tadhginwicklow · 30 Oct 2026, 14:08 UTC

American History X is one I am weighing up. Could someone add a spoiler-free note about the opening? That is usually what helps me choose.

ciaran.osullivan · 31 Oct 2026, 04:08 UTC

Tadhg, that is a good way of choosing. I tend to match the pick to the evening as well.

For anyone considering American History X: Keeping this on the list for a quieter evening rather than trying to squeeze it in.
